The Bag That Gets You Out
In April 2023, Americans trapped in Khartoum watched their city fall apart overnight. With gunfire echoing through the streets and the airport disabled, many had to flee by car for hundreds of miles to reach safety in Port Sudan.
Some had just minutes to grab what they could. The ones who already had a simple go-bag: cash, passport copies, water, a backup phone…were out the door and on the move.
The others scrambled.
This wasn’t the first time. In 1998, riots in Jakarta erupted so fast that foreigners were pulled from cars, businesses were looted, and embassies locked their gates. Traffic froze. Communications failed.
Americans caught in the chaos had only what they could carry. The lesson was the same both times: if you wait to pack, you’re already behind.
